About Book Rat

Book Rat reviews books the way a thoughtful Christian reader actually decides whether to pick one up. Instead of a single star rating, every review breaks the book down into the content areas that matter — language, sexual content, substance use, violence, and spiritual themes — and scores each one.

Those scores roll up into a single rating. Each content type carries a severity reflecting how much it concerns a Christian reader, and the more of it a book contains, the more it compounds — so one serious element can drag a book down on its own. That means two very different books can be compared on the same scale.

Numbers only tell part of the story, though. Reviewers also write commentary for each category and a personal note, so you get context rather than a bare score.
