Substance Use
The FMC's father drinks in the earlier part of the book. It is later revealed that he did it for her. Without spoiling it, it does seem to be genuine and not just some excuse he was making up to justify the drinking.
Violence
Gunfights are common, sometimes ending in death.
Spiritual Content
The book follows a character who seems to want to know God but has not yet accepted Him. She frequently tells God that she will do X if He does Y to always be answered with nothing. It's a light subplot overall.
But it does intertwine deeply with a more intriguing question posed by the book: why does God allow suffering? This is notoriously a difficult question to satisfy in the Christian community. I think Smyth did an excellent job tackling it.
